Istanbul Airport to Bakirkoy: How to Get There

  • Updated:
  • 4 min read

From Istanbul Airport (IST), the most practical way to Bakırköy (Bakirkoy) is a taxi or a car: the drive is roughly 40 kilometres and takes 40–70 minutes depending on traffic. If you prefer public transport, Havaist buses run from the airport to various points around the city; check the current route and stops before you travel.

Below we compare the two options, then take you through the trip from landing to our door. Our address is Zeytinlik neighbourhood, Fazılpaşa Sokak No:4, Bakırköy.

First, a common mix-up

Atatürk Airport, the one closest to Bakırköy, is closed to passenger flights. In Istanbul, passenger flights use Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW). Check which airport is printed on your ticket: if you land at Sabiha Gökçen, our Sabiha Gökçen guide is a better fit for you.

Arriving by taxi

  1. After collecting your luggage, follow the airport signs to the taxi rank.
  2. Give the driver the full address, or show it on your phone: Zeytinlik neighbourhood, Fazılpaşa Sokak No:4, Bakırköy.
  3. Check that the meter is switched on when you set off. Taxis in Istanbul run on the meter.
  4. Morning and evening rush hours can stretch the journey, so allow some slack when you plan.
  5. Once you are on the road, message us your estimated arrival time on WhatsApp in English and we will plan your check-in around it.

Arriving by Havaist bus

Havaist runs buses from Istanbul Airport to various points in the city. Lines, stops and departure times change from time to time, so it is worth choosing your line right before you travel:

  • Before the journey, look at Havaist's current route list and find the line that serves Bakırköy or somewhere close by.
  • Once you know your stop, plan how to get from there to the address. If the stop is near Marmaray Bakırköy station, the address is an 8-minute walk; if it is near İncirli, it is 18 minutes.
  • If you would rather not walk far with a suitcase, finish the last stretch with a short taxi ride.

Buses use the roads too, so traffic affects them; add waiting and transfer time when you estimate the total.

Landing late at night

Check-in starts at 14:00; a late-night arrival can be arranged when you tell us in advance. If your flight lands after midnight, make sure to mention it when you book. If you are delayed, our phone and WhatsApp line is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so you can send the new time straight away. For early-morning landings, early check-in depends on availability and has to be requested beforehand.

Have these with you on arrival

  • A passport for every guest; Turkish citizens can show their national ID card instead. In Turkey, accommodation providers are legally required to register every guest's ID details.
  • The written message confirming your booking.
  • Your address in writing; handy for showing a driver.

You will find everything asked for at check-in in our guide to what to know before you stay.

Travelling with family or lots of luggage

A direct taxi ride is usually less tiring for families with children and for guests with a lot of luggage. Once you reach the door, the rest is easy: the building has a lift, so you can take your suitcases up to your apartment without effort, and the security cameras are reassuring when you arrive at night.

If you want more space after a long flight, choose the Two-bedroom apartment (2+1) for 4–5 guests or the One-bedroom apartment (1+1) for 2–3; both have a kitchen and a living room. For 1–2 guests on a stay of a few nights, the Studio apartment (1+0) is practical. All options are on the apartments page.

Heading into the city the next day

Once you are settled you do not need the airport road again to get around. Marmaray Bakırköy station is an 8-minute walk away; Yenikapı is about 15 minutes and Sirkeci about 20 minutes by train. Bakırköy Freedom Square (Özgürlük Meydanı) and İstanbul Caddesi are 6 minutes away.

Getting back to the airport

Allow the same time for the return trip: 40–70 minutes by car, depending on traffic and time of day. Check-out is at 11:00; if your flight is in the evening, ask about a late check-out in advance, as it depends on availability. Baggage and security checks at the airport take time too, so setting off early makes the day easier.
