Sabiha Gökçen to Bakirkoy

Sabiha Gökçen Airport to Bakirkoy: Metro and Taxi

  • Updated:
  • 4 min read

The clearest public transport route from Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) to Bakırköy (Bakirkoy) is the M4 metro to Ayrılık Çeşmesi and a change there to the Marmaray; the journey takes about 90 minutes. By taxi or car the roughly 50-kilometre drive takes 60–90 minutes depending on traffic.

Sabiha Gökçen is on the Asian side and Bakırköy on the European side, so either way you cross the Bosphorus. On the rail route you cross through the Marmaray tunnel under the strait and are not affected by road traffic. On the road, journey times can stretch or shrink noticeably with traffic at the crossing and along the way. Below we walk through both options step by step, then show in a table which one suits whom.

By rail, step by step

  1. Take the M4 at the airport. The M4 runs between Kadıköy and Sabiha Gökçen Airport and stays entirely on the Asian side. Board the train heading for Kadıköy.
  2. Get off at Ayrılık Çeşmesi. This is where you change to the Marmaray. Follow the signs to the Marmaray platform.
  3. Take the Marmaray towards Halkalı. After Üsküdar the train passes through the Bosphorus tunnel to the European side; after Sirkeci, Yenikapı, Kazlıçeşme, Zeytinburnu and Yenimahalle it reaches Bakırköy.
  4. Get off at Bakırköy station. From the station it is 600 metres, about 8 minutes on foot, to our address in Zeytinlik.

2Marmaray, towards HalkalıAyrılık Çeşmesi → Bakırköy
3WalkBakırköy station → Fazılpaşa Sokak No:4 (8 min)

The total is about 90 minutes and varies a little with walking and waiting time at the change. Istanbulkart works on both lines. If you are landing late at night in particular, check the current M4 and Marmaray timetable before you set out.

By taxi or car

A taxi is more comfortable for anyone who wants to go door to door with luggage. The road is about 50 kilometres and takes 60–90 minutes depending on traffic. Taxis in Istanbul run on the meter; check that it is switched on when you set off and show the address in writing: Zeytinlik neighbourhood, Fazılpaşa Sokak No:4, Bakırköy.

If you land late at night and will not make the last M4 or Marmaray train, a taxi becomes the most practical option. In that case it matters that you tell us your arrival time in advance so your check-in can be planned.

Which one should you choose?

Light luggage, daytime landingM4 + Marmaray
Peak traffic hoursM4 + Marmaray, because the Bosphorus crossing is underground
Lots of luggage or small childrenTaxi or car
Late-night landingCheck the timetable first; take a taxi if needed

Practical tips for the Marmaray with luggage

  • Do not rush the change at Ayrılık Çeşmesi; follow the signs.
  • Make sure you are on the Halkalı-bound train. In the opposite direction you would head towards Gebze via Söğütlüçeşme.
  • From Bakırköy station the walk is 8 minutes. In the rain or with a lot of luggage, you can cover this last stretch with a short taxi ride.
  • To get to know the Marmaray line better, see our Bakırköy transport guide.

Getting back to Sabiha Gökçen

The return is the same route in reverse:

  1. Walk from the address to Marmaray Bakırköy station (8 minutes).
  2. Take the Marmaray towards Gebze; after Yenikapı and Sirkeci the train goes through the tunnel, and you get off at Ayrılık Çeşmesi, after Üsküdar.
  3. Change to the M4 and board the train towards Sabiha Gökçen Airport.

This trip also takes about 90 minutes. Remember that baggage and security checks at the airport take time too. Check-out is at 11:00; if your flight is in the evening, late check-out depends on availability and has to be asked for in advance. If you go by taxi, allow 60–90 minutes depending on traffic and leave extra margin at peak times.

Arrival and check-in

Check-in starts at 14:00. If you land early in the morning, early check-in depends on availability, so ask in advance. If you are arriving late at night, let us know beforehand; our line is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so you can send a new time if you are delayed. Every guest needs a passport at check-in; Turkish citizens can show their national ID card instead.

At the end of a long journey the building has a lift, so your suitcases go up to your apartment without effort, and the security cameras are reassuring for night arrivals.
